National Umpire School March 15-17 2013, Portland OR

NUSBlues from around the region gather in their uniforms on March 15th in Portland OR at the Airport Sheraton. We come together to practice, learn, and develop the very best knowledge and skills to become better umpires on the field. Members from the ASA National Umpiring Staff come to share their decades of knowledge and experience and stories that find a way to touch each umpire – new or advanced – with just the right tidbit that is needed at just the right time.

The SMSUA Board has approved funding for returning SMSUA members to help cover the cost of your registration – IF YOU LET US KNOW WE WILL TAKE THE $80 OUT AS A DRAW FROM YOUR 2013 EARNINGS! Click here for the registration form, fill it out and either pay for it yourself and send it in to the address listed OR send it to Kayleen or Tom in an email saying you want to have the registration cost taken from your 2013 pay. Deadline for this special service is JANUARY 10, 2013.

ASA 2013 Rule Changes

New Changes to Batting Out of Order for 2013!

Hey Blues!

Hot off the press!  ASA 2013 rule changes are posted on-line here.

Brief highlights include:

  1. There’s a new 2013 Certification Mark for bats – bats with the 2013 mark are allowed ONLY in Slow Pitch
  2. 14U Girls pitch from 43’ and can wear metal cleats
  3. JO Boys FP pitching rule now models the Men’s pitching rule
  4. In Batting Out of Order (for all games EXCEPT Co-Ed) – if the incorrect batter is discovered after the turn at bat, the time at bat is negated (batter cannot be called “out” or “safe”).  The batter who should have batted is out, any runners who were called out remain out, and any runners who were NOT called out must return to the base occupied at time of pitch.

Check out the link for more changes and comments. And we’ll definitely get more information to you soon!

Thank You Veterans!

Thank you to all who serve, your families, and loved ones. We are eternally grateful for your service; past, present, and future.

Just Take a Moment

Remembering and honoring our strength and our humanity

Congrats to Award Winners

Gerald St. Clair is Umpire of the Year

We had food and games and lots of time to talk with friends during our 2012 Awards Picnic. Oh yeah, and we handed out some awards.

Here’s a full list of award winners:

Commissioner’s Award: Don Hough
Commissioner’s Distinguished Service Award: Lori Bish
Rookie of the Year: Steven Choi
Slow Pitch Award: Alex Momb
High School Umpire of the Year: Steve Sax
President’s Award: Kayleen Dunson
Umpire of the Year: Gerald St. Clair

Congratulations to everyone!

Even the smallest kids loved putting on the uniform and equipment!

We also had plenty of good food, an annual egg toss (won by Dean Fitzsimmons and Mark Jordan – check out their photo on the SMSUA Facebook page), a water balloon toss (and subsequent “fight”), and a relay race where kids had to don full umpire uniform and equipment.

A huge thank you to Erin Peterson, Megan Rabin, and Wally Chocklon for organizing the picnic, cooking the food, and making sure we had awards to hand out this year.

We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!
